The first few pages explore some of the background to this age-old craft as it examines some of the fundamentals for getting started, such as points of safety, equipment, ingredients etc… You soon realise that soap making is a very accessible to everyone.

It is written so clearly and in such a ‘you can do this’ way, you are rolling up your sleeves, ready to get stuck in and give it a go, by page 17. That’s a good thing too because the following pages are dedication to 11, delectable and very tempting recipes. These are beautifully illustrated, using so many different luscious ingredients, such as pumice and nettles, in the Gardeners Soap, goats milk in the Calendula and Goats Milk Soap and even beer in the Shaving Soap recipe – there’s plenty of information on where you can get these ingredients too.

It is perhaps a good idea to read through the basic method, later in the book, before deciding which recipe you are going to try first. It gives VERY clear, step-by-step instructions and illustrations to take you through every single step of the process, logically and systematically.

Of course, like with cooking, things may not go according to plan, when trying new recipes and what is particularly good about this book is the Troubleshooting section, which examines possible problems that can arise during the soap making process and offers solutions or ways to avoid problems in clear, non-jargon English.

There’s also a section that provides links and contacts for further reading or information, support networks and accessible suppliers.

To sum up, this book is rather like Dr Who’s Tardis – small on the outside but HUGE inside. So much has been packed in, yet it is completely uncluttered, clear, logical and beautifully illustrated. Well written, informative and inspiring.
I am ever so excited, having (finally) published to the site a new range of fragrance oils. A fun range of smell-a-likes in the Fresholi Sweet Shop. Still looking for a few sweeties to photograph (Black Jacks are more difficult to find than you think) and I will add the pics in due course. This range actually got my own creative juices flowing with thoughts of the fun bath time products that 'fit' the fragrance. None have been test run, at least not in soap, so your feedback will be of great value.

A couple of other new products include 250g Tin Tie Bags as well as Easimulse, which is a really easy-to-use, cost-effective emulsifier (excellent for beginners)

Natural Vitamin E is now back in stock but the best thing is, I have can now offer it at a much lower price than ever before, which feels good - especially as we are all trying to make savings where we can ;o)

Also back in stock are a few old favourite Allergen Free Fragrance Oils, Baby Powder, Melon Boat and (my personal favourite) The Happy Hippy.

There's still a few more products to add (a new allergen free FO and another FO), but I am just waiting on the right documentation for those and a couple of gorgeous and interesting materials (that are very much in-keeping with Fresholi's natural theme). I will keep you posted on those though.
This cream is a great example of how a simply structured
formula can create a luxurious and indulgent cream. I love the way this feels on the skin, being velvety and
smooth. The richness of the dark,
organic cocoa butter mixed with the emollient and super-fast absorbent
qualities of the meadowfoam oil, form the heart of this lovely cream that sinks
in beautifully.

Being simple in formulation leaves plenty of room to put
your own stamp on it, by adding different ingredients, but I think it is lovely
just as it is. The other nice thing
about this cream is its appearance.
Because it contains unfiltered, organic, virgin cocoa butter (that
retains the natural cocoa solids that gives it its dark colouring), it slightly
tints the cream and leaves little speckles of cocoa throughout, which is
reminiscent of expensive vanilla ice-cream, with specks of vanilla pods. Click to view recipe at Fresholi....

I had a little playtime yesterday and came up with a new receipe, that I have added to the Fresholi site. This makes a lovely, rich and dense hand/body cream, with lots of body, hence the name. Body On Body Cream is ideal for dry skins, although most skins will benefit from the rich texture. It is easily absorbed and easy to make.

This formula a couple of ingredients that I am finding quite interesting at the moment. Honey powder, exploring its humectant properties, and stearic acid. I hadn’t had much experience with stearic previously but recently, the more I have been working with it, the more I am liking it and what it brings to the formulation.

Actually, I have focussing my attention on all sorts of exotic emulsifiers over the past few months, that I had been neglecting the simple, no-frills emulsifying powder. I had forgotten how good it is.

Anyway, here's the recipe.......... Body On Body Cream
Helenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05841090451256882230noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6167838486742947101.post-24260755743864267012012-04-28T20:45:00.000+01:002012-04-28T20:45:21.659+01:00More New Products...

This will help to absorb some of the impact of the impending price increases at Royal Mail, because HDPE is much lighter in weigh and far less fragile.

Of course, it goes without saying that essential oils will continue to be supplied in amber glass bottles, but of other materials, such as fragrance oils, lip balm flavours and some lipids, HDPE seems a sensible step to take to reduce the shipping costs to customers.

Just a quick note, unlike the glass bottles, the HDPE bottles will not have a dropper, as the affected materials were unable to be dispensed effectively through the orifice of the droppers, so these will be a simple screw cap that will make dispensing a little easier (which will save you the trouble of removing the dropper insert to get at the contents).

Streamlining & Simplifying

You will notice that some product, such as fragrance oils and lip balm flavours, will now have a standard price structure. This is to help keep things a little more streamline for us and the predictability is useful for customers who are planning their stock/future purchases when making site to site price comparisons and, for some ranges, they will no longer have to list individual products, simply a product range. Hopefully this is a positive move for us all.

Reductions Across The Whole Site

There have been price reductions across the whole site wherever it has been possible and I have also introduced bigger sizes for many products, to help make ordering Midi-Bulk easier. I am still working on adding bigger sizes, this will be an ongoing process, so bear with me.

New Products

Ooh… I am really excited to be adding a whole new range of products and this is only the first wave. There’s more to come. I thought it was time for Fresholi to explore its fun side with products that inspire a more colourful type of creativity. I think this will be particularly useful in the coming weeks, when the new additions 'go live' so to speak.

It will be both useful for Fresholi but, most importantly, it will be useful for other customers. There's nothing quite like the shared views and opinions of others to help you decide whether a product is right for you.

There have been a few reviews added already (my sincerest thanks to them) and it would be wonderful (for everyone) if we could add some more. So, next time you visit the Fresholi Shop it would be utterly brilliant if you left a little review/feedback that you think might be useful to others, or maybe you just want to leave a comment for no other reason but to leave a comment. I, for one, would be ever so grateful but I know it would be very much appreciated by other visitors. Please also feel free to include your URL (this isn't linkable unfortunately, the software doesn't have that facility, but it could be copy & pasted).

Ooh... and if you haven't already, don't forget to submit your weblink to the main site. Remember, if you are a member of Fresholi, you can submit your press releases and news, to be published on the front page.

So, until the next update, stay happy and keep smiling :o)Helenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05841090451256882230noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6167838486742947101.post-37404293705033580882012-03-31T19:22:00.004+01:002012-03-31T20:48:11.755+01:00Venture Into Pastures NewThere’s some exciting times ahead at Fresholi. I have always been expanding the available lines, with the introduction of this and that. It has worked well enough and the range has gradually increased over time.

However, I think it is time to step it up a gear and over the past few weeks, I have been investing a fair bit in Fresholi, so over the coming weeks, we’ll see lots of new products being added as we step into pastures new. Watch this space…..

On another note, as we all know, Royal Mail are putting up their prices. While we can’t get around that, what we can do is try to think of ways to ‘lighten the load’ so to speak.

Fresholi’s fragrance oils and lip balm flavour oils are normally supplied in glass bottles. Glass is heavy though. So for these materials, I will be switching to HDPE bottles. These are more lightweight and have the added advantage of being far less fragile and this will also negate the need for all the extra bubble wrap (which adds more weight/cost). Of course, it goes without saying that there will be no change to how Fresholi’s essential oils are packaged and they will continue to be supplied in amber, glass bottles.

There will also be a little restructuring of pricing of these materials. Not only will this help to streamline things a little bit, but it will also help Fresholi to absorb some of the rising costs without affecting the customer too much. Also, for some products, larger sizes will be available directly from the site – it will just make it easier for everyone I think.

Your suggestions for new products will always be welcome, so if you have any, I would love to hear them.

Until the next post, happy Easter to everyone and I will keep you posted xHelenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05841090451256882230noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6167838486742947101.post-15284404124377423092012-03-08T10:41:00.002+00:002012-03-08T10:46:14.458+00:00Welcome New & OldIntroducing a new product to Fresholi, olive squalane, a key ingredient in many skin and hair care products, especially those designed for dry, dehydrated and ageing skin. I don't know how many will want their soapies featured in the article but I will initiate the call out to followers of @Myboho on twitter and will be available to followers of the Maboho.blogspot.com.

But I do need your help in boosting the Maboho blog, site and Myboho twitter followers. The bigger the following, the wider the audience I can reach to promote your products and businesses. Although maboho.co.uk is becoming rather popular and getting more and more new visitors every day.

I am looking to create pictoral links to really beautiful, handmade soaps. If you have a pride and joy you would like to feature and would like a chance to be included in the article, follow @Myboho on twitter and follow the Maboho.blogspot.com.

When the call out appears at @Myboho, there will be a few hours to submit:

1 x Picture of your bestest soapie

I will need:

-company name
-name of soap
-link to where it can be purchased online
-price/size
-1 really short product description (I may not be able to include the caption if it is too long - sorry)
-If you are willing to offer an exlusive discount/special offer for Maboho visitors, that would be great and may help drive traffic to your sites. I may need you to give me a code so that you will recognise where the traffic is coming from.

To be sent to enquiries@maboho.co.uk and the subject line 'SOAP NOV'

It will be a first come, first serve and I will try to fit in as many as I can without overloading the article with pictures and preference will be given to any exclusive offers to Maboho visitors.

I don't plan to launch the call out until @Myboho twitter followers has exceeded 60 (at least) and will be available to Maboho.blogspot.com followers. So please go and follow on twitter and the blogspot. This helps to boost Maboho/Myboho followers and the more that follow, the bigger the audience there is to promote your products. If you can also raise awareness of Maboho (site, blog and Myboho twitter) to really boost up those followers, it would it help me to help you, if you see what I mean :o)Helenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05841090451256882230noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6167838486742947101.post-17269415926393162342011-10-29T17:12:00.007+01:002011-10-29T18:50:08.148+01:00Get Involved...Sorry, it is ages since I posted here. Anyway, I have a couple of things that you might be interested in. I would like to feature some of your Christmas Products in a Handmade Christmas. More about this later but first, you need to know where this feature will be.

Some of you may be familiar with a recent project I have been working on. For those of you that aren't aware, it is my pleasure to introduce Maboho!

The Maboho scene is set around beauty & style for the 'average' Jo(anne). By 'average' I mean us everyday folks, who love beauty & fashion, regardless of age, size, shape and lifestyle. It brings together 'real' people with 'real' views, opinions and ideas by featuring review blogs/vlogs from hard-working and talented beauty and style bloggers.

The platform will feature beauty & style products from both the High Street to the individualism of hand crafted products. The bias will be on small, independant businesses of course, but by sharing the same platform with more mainstream brands, it is hoped that it will raise the profile and general awareness of small businesses.

There is a forum too. This forum is completely different to that of the Fresholi forum though, so not for technical/business discussion. What I would like to do with this is build a community where beauty & style focussed businesses/bloggers can interact and build nice relationships with those who would be consumers.

Nice easy talk and relationship building for us mere 'average' beautiful people of the internet world ;) So if this is the sort of thing you think you could get involved in, do join us - It is only a baby as we are in the early stages at the moment but more we can grow the community, the more people you can reach out to, s0 please get involved, and spread the word so we can move this out of its infancy.

How You Can Get Involved With Maboho

If you have any products that you have had reviewed, particlarly by a beauty/style blogger and especially by vlogger, send me an email to enquiries@maboho.co.uk with a link to the review. I can then set about adding the review to the site (once I have the blogger's permission of course).

If you are releasing a new line of products or have a presentation that you think may 'fit', just let me know.

You can also add your business listing to the directory and tell anyone else, who have a beauty/style related business to add theirs.

Follow Maboho tweets.... @Myboho and tell others. The wider the audience, the bigger exposure I can give to businesses (if you see what I mean).

So, onto the 'Handmade Christmas' feature....

I am going to put together a feature called 'Handmade Christmas', which will feature a range of bath and body gift sets that have all been handmade.

If you have your Christmas gifts all ready and can be bought online (now or very soon) and would like it to be included...

Send it to enquiries@maboho.co.uk but please put the subject title as BB Christmas (otherwise I may not be able to find it in the inbox when calling up the emails)

I will need:

- 1 Picture (a nice, large quality picture is best so I can resize it)

- 1 Name of gift set/name on your site

- 1-2 Lines of descriptive text and something that 'sells' your product

- Contents and sizes (ie 1 x soap 90g 1 x body butter 200g etc...)

- Cost

- Any special offer (such as gift wrapping, discounts etc....) - just as a note, if you are able to do an exclusive offer just for those who visit fro Maboho, that might be really good for generating more interest there - the bigger the audience there, the more exposure future promotions/presentations etc.... businesses will get IYSWIM, so any help would be greatly appreciated

-Links to any blog/vlog reviews of any product within the gift package if available. I noticed on the stats that products that had a review linked generated a lot of interest[/li][/list]

Please only send 1 product detail at this point and depending on what response I get to this, it might be that I won't be able to use all submissions, but I will try. The closing date for submissions is 12 Noon GMT Wednesday 2nd November

Do You Know Any Crafters/Designers Of Clothing/Accessories/Gifts?

I would like to feature some gift ideas for hand crafted / uniquely designed clothing/accessories/gifts that would make ideal Christmas gifts. If there's anyone you are in contact with or who's work impresses you and they make some really stylish/unique clothing pieces/accessories and you think they should be featured, please point them to this blog post for the details, because I would rather feature someone known by a blog reader.

For Crafters/Designers Of Clothing/Accessories/Gifts...

If you would like your product featured, it needs to be available to buy on the internet (now or very soon). Please send 1 submission only at this point, to enquiries@maboho.co.uk but please put the subject title as CAG Christmas and I will need to locate it. How lovely! It reminded me of those lovely cake boxes that contain those exquisite cupcakes.

Inside, nestled among a lovely deep purple was a kilner jar of Yogi’s Bath Salts, which looks fit for a king or queen. Containing Himalayan Pink salt with a sprinkling of rose petals and a blend of essential oils including lavender, frankincense and marjoram – lovely to induce deep relaxation and calm while soothing aching muscles. It smells divine!!

Also two bars of soap, one that has been hand-milled for gentleness and care of the face. This pretty, layered Rice Pudding Castille soap is rich in olive oil and also contains pink clay and ground rice, to gently cleanse. With essential oils of ylang and sandalwood, it has a rich and round aroma. This really is a most gentle and caring soap and while the skin feels lovely and clean, it doesn’t leave it feeling tight or dry.

The luscious Cupuacu soap, from the Amazonian Butters range, is unscented and has a most rich and lush lather, leaving the skin feeling calm and comfortable.

I think what is so unique about Skin Bistro is that a beautiful balance has been struck between keeping packaging minimal while still creating an enormous impact with presentation. These soaps are enriched with cocoa butter and olive oil, among other lovely goodies. The scents are gorgeous and the lather is rich, creamy and delightful. It is like a luxurious skin treatment, every time you wash and leaves the skin soft, silky and gently scented.

Looking on the website, there are quite a few different soaps to choose from. What is clear is that each one has had a lot of thought and consideration to make it slightly different from the others, so no matter which one you choose, you know get more that just a lovely soap, you get a little bit of heart and soul too.

Polish Up!

The Tangerine body polish is gorgeous. The aroma from the essential oils is astonishing. Fresh, bright, fruity and sparkly!! It contains a high proportion of shea butter, so the skin is utterly drenched in skin-loving goodness. The sugar particles slough away dead skin cells, leaving the skin alive and glowing. I found that this polish has been remarkable used on my winter hands, at night, especially when it is preceded with one of the rich, creamy soaps (the Lemon Soul is my favourite). I found I didn’t even need to moisturise after. The soap and the scrub was enough to relieve dry hands.

Getting Lippy

The lip balm is wonderful. It glides on perfectly to instantly relieve any dryness. The balms are rich in cocoa butter (which I love in lip balms) so leave the lips soft and gives them an appearance of fullness. It has a lovely shine and has been an absolute godsend, especially during these really cold winter days. Like the soaps, there are plenty to choose from. I tried Dew Drops (which tastes a little bit like Pear Drops), which was lovely. I do have my eye on the Coco-Vanille, which contains virgin cocoa butter and a hint of vanilla (yum!)

For more lovely skin treats, visit www.spiralsoaps.com. The balm glides on like a dream, deliciously melting onto the lips with no drag at all – perfect! Initially, when you apply it, it feels cooling but then is feeiling soon replaced by a comforting warm sensation.

I absolutely love a lip balm that shines and boy, this positively gleems!! I have been using it over the top of a natural rosy lip liner and it gives a brilliant effect, making the lips appear healthy, shiny and full. I also like how it lasts so long. Yes, I think I am rather smitten and would, wholeheartedly recommend it. It is really easy to apply as it just glides on like silk. The smooth texture feels incredibly luxurious and the aroma is exotic and heady – wonderful for winding down in the evening.

I was also lucky enough to try the Geranium & Vetivert Moisturising Balm. What a perfect balance of rosy geranium that is underpinned by just the smoky richness of vetivert. The moisturizing balms are so cute! Three heart-shaped mini massage bars presented in an pretty organza pouch. These would make an absolutely lovely gift for someone special.

Both balms are enriched with pure shea butter, which sinks into the skin – no mess, no grease – just a lovely, silky after feel and a slight sheen that gives the skin a nice healthy glow.

The cocoa butter rich lip balms are superb. I tried the Delicous Honey, Vanilla & Coffee Balm, in a twist up, oval tube. The shape allows for a lovely smooth application. I loved using this during the day to keep my lips soft and intensely moisturised. This will be an excellent balm for cold winter days. Really protective.

The other balm I was lucky enough to try was the Lavender Lip Balm, in a cute and handy slip tin. Indeed most responsible therapists do. However, it does amaze me sometimes when I have new but supposedly ‘wax-savvy’ client book in with me and they look at me blankly when I ask if they, for example, exfoliate between treatments (is this not important in the prevention of ingrown hairs?).

I remember one (new) client saying to me (as I was doing a final check for any residual wax following a half leg & bikini) “oh don’t worry about that, a nice hot bath later does the trick!” It turns out that this was part of the aftercare that she had been previously given. Wax treatments + Hot baths or any other heat treatment = Ouch! Trying to remain professional (and not scream of the wrongness of such advice), I diplomatically explained more appropriate methods of removing wax residue (namely afterwax lotion).

Adequate aftercare advice is crucial, particularly in the first 24-48 hours but equally important is a brief explanation of the hair growth cycle and general structure of the skin. Why? Well, if a client is more informed about what is happening to their skin and hair between treatments they will more encouraged to apply the appropriate homecare to prevent ingrown hairs & better prepare the area for their next wax (and it will also help to explain why a few hairs seem to start growing back shortly after treatment).

Aftercare is essential and (most) insurance companies will insist that the client signs their record card to confirm they have received & understood the (written) advice given on every visit. Advice should include…

Keep area clean and avoid touching the area (increased risk of infection)

No hot baths, showers or heat treatments (such as sauna or steam) for 24 hours (min)

Do not expose area to chlorinated water (no swimming) for 24 hours (min)

Do not use perfumes, lotions, sprays, talc, self-tan lotion etc…except those recommended by the therapist 24 hours (min)

Wear loose clothing (avoid tights, leggings & other tight-fitting clothes)

Treat area sensitively avoiding heat and friction

Do not massage area for 24 hours (min)

Avoid exercise (such as aerobics)

Avoid make-up for 24 hours (min)

Avoid sunlight & do not use a sun bed for 48 hours (min) – use a sun block regularly

Apply antiseptic lotion 3 times in the first 24 hours

If red & irritated, bathe area with a salt-water solution frequently using cool boiled water (1 cup) + salt (1/2 teaspoon)

48 hours after treatment, commence homecare…

Exfoliate 2 times a week and it is advisable to exfoliate the day before next wax treatment
Keep area well moisturised

So conclude, adequate advice is of the utmost importance for both the client & the treating therapist. It helps equip clients with the knowledge and understanding to ensure satisfaction, confidence in their therapist’s professionalism and optimises the success of future treatment. But ultimately, correct & appropriate advice ensures the client’s welfare & safety.Helenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05841090451256882230noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6167838486742947101.post-18887408240618517292010-08-08T19:25:00.006+01:002010-08-08T20:26:33.703+01:00New Recipes / TutorialHow are you all? If you haven't seen it already and are in need of some inspiration or are simply curious to know how some interesting and utterly beautiful soaps are made, you must have a look at Tiggy's fantastic video tutorial.

Tiggy, from Future Primitive was recently featured on The Soap Bar blog. The tutorial is in two parts and is so simple, clear and very inspiring (although she makes it look much easier than I imagine it is, lol). It demonstrates how she creates her gorgeous Humbug soap which features a lovely circle right in the centre (pictured above). Visually stunning. Her video can also be found on her Future Primitive Blog.

Do go and have a peek at some of the other beautiful soaps when you visit - they are just lovely.

Future Primitive SoapHelenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05841090451256882230noreply@blogger.com8
